Circa 1880. A late Victorian Louie XV style mahogany coal box or purdonium. With raised carved back with C and S scrolls on the fore-edges, solid top with a lovely moulded fore-edge. The front has a cartouche shaped panel, with a large brass knob for opening to show the metal liner inside with a small shovel to the back, there are further mouldings and a shaped frieze to the front and sides. Back legs are simply turned, front legs elegant cabriole legs with a reeded fore edge.
