Description

Circa 1870, unusual Victorian pollard oak davenport. The top has a mother of pearl inlay on the flat section – stating ‘Oak, The Growth of Woodbrook‘. The slope has an unusual green leather writing surface which is tooled, gilded and has a nice pattern on it. This is hinged and opens to reveal a mahogany interior with three various drawers and one dummy drawer. Each of the drawers has ebonised knob handles. On the dummy drawer, one of the handles pulls out to release a pen slide on the side. The front section has two large turned barley sugar columns with stylish capitals at the top and rounded bases. On each side are arched panels, the right hand side one is a door and opens to reveal a section of four slides all made in mahogany. The back of the davenport has matching pollard oak veneers and beneath this is a rectangular apron which runs all around. The whole piece finishes on four squat feet with porcelain and brass castors beneath. Unusual piece of Victorian furniture, very stylish and good quality.
