Description
Circa 1820, an early George IV mahogany and ebonised inlaid wine cooler. This wine cooler or vin de garde is of sarcophagus shape. This rectangular piece has a flat top and this section is framed by an ebony inlay. It has acanthus sections that come off. The corners all taper down to the fore edge of the top and its ebony inlay. There is a line mask handle on the front with a ring pull that opens to reveal the interior. This unusual interior space has been given a galvanised waterproof liner at some stage, and the lifting handles inside are also line mask handles in cast brass. At the sides are 2 large original cast brass handles in the form of line mask with ring pulls through the mouth. There is an ebony inlay between the lid and the open section. The base has a double ebony section with cross banded mahogany on either side. It stands on 4 bobbin feet with brass cup castors. The piece has a mellow colour, and has a flat surface that could be used for lamps or other pieces.
