Description

Circa 1830, unusual and stylish Dutch marquetry cylinder topped desk. The rectangular shaped desk is in rosewood which has faded nicely. The sides, gables and legs are smothered in typical Dutch marquetry. The cylinder of the desk has a big bouquet of flowers in the centre and from this there is flowers on top in different colours and also mother of pearl. When the top pulls back, a large writing surface is revealed with an oval panel similar to the top and profusely inlaid with marquetry. In the centre at the back is a small door and inside another marquetry drawer. When the slide is pushed back the desk locks and it retains its unusual original lock. When the lock is turned a bell rings within the chamber of the desk, presumed to be a 19th century security aspect. The whole piece stands on 4 elegant but simple cabriole legs.
