Description
Stylish mahogany toilet mirror by ‘R.S McAlpine, Cabinetmakers, 51A George Street, Edinburgh’ the well documented toilet mirror in the ‘Lorimer’ style, with shaped frame with curved top in book-matched flame mahogany, the bevel edge mirror following the form of the frame, supported on a pair of tapering uprights, the frame held in place by cast brass axe head drops, the flat section with book-matched mahogany, the base in the form of a small bureau with wonderful figured mahogany, the flap with mother of pearl heart shaped escutcheon opens to reveal a well-fitted interior with various drawers and polished surfaces, beneath this is a shaped frieze and a double serpentine drawer with a mother of pearl heart-shaped escutcheon, Inside beneath the drawer there is a trade label, with a serpentine frieze to the front, the toilet mirror rests on four elegant turned feet, also included is a card which states that this mirror was made personally by Robert Smith of McAlpine at 51A George Street, Edinburgh in June 1939. Robert Smith was born on 1st December 1886 at Carluke.
