Circa 1880. A mahogany and inlaid Carlton house desk with all the locks stamped, ‘Gillows of Lancaster’, of traditional form with a raised curved back with pierced gilded gallery, with sloping ends withdrawer beneath, with insert tooled and gilded writing surface, two banks of drawers flanked by two curved cupboards, all with lovely simple moulded fore-edge, beneath the writing surface one long drawer flanked by a pair of shorter drawers all with heralded shaped escutcheons with elegant cast brass handles polished on all sides making the desk free-standing, all resting on four square tapering legs with string inlay, finishing with a brass cup with original casters beneath
