Description

Circa 1800.  Quality inlaid brass-faced mahogany Georgian grandfather clock by John Douglas of Galston.  Surmounted by a shaped cornice with carved paterae, the silvered brass dial with Roman numerals and a secondary minute hand bearing the maker’s name.  The clockface door flanked by fluted pillars with brass supports above a chequered inlaid door with Sheraton-style shell inlay & the base with further shell and chequered inlay.   Lovely rich colour and patina.

A label inside the door notes that John Douglas had a clockmakers business in Galston prior to 1824 and the case of this clock having Sheraton string inlay is believed to be from around 1800. He then moved to Dumbarton where he died in 1837 and was succeeded by his son Walter Douglas who transferred the business back to Galston that same year.
