After 1956, oak framed Orkney Chair. The chair has been stamped underneath with the mark of David Kirkness. A second mark (an ‘R’ with a thistle in the middle next to an ‘E’) shows that it was made by Reynold Eunson, 1932-1978.
Eunson took over Kirkness’s chair workshop in 1956, and so this chair can be dated after that time. He would have retained the original ‘David Kirkness, Kirkwall, Orkney, Made in Scotland’ stamp, and used it to note the make and design. Eunson continued using the original templates from Kirkness’s Orkney chairs, and this is an excellent example of this practice. This chair has been made in oak.
