Chippendale Style Mahogany Desk

Product Description

Circa 1900, good Chippendale style mahogany desk. The rectangular top has the original green tooled leather writing surface and a stylish carved fore edge, above a configuration of 3 drawers – 1 long drawer and 2 shorter left and right. The drawers have foliate gesso applied in the corners and very stylish carved wooden knob handles in the form of flower heads. There is egg and dart beading beneath the top drawers which runs around the sides of the desk, and beneath the centre drawer are carved foliate quarter brackets. These are carved in wood. There are 2 further drawers either side with the same stylish knobs and gesso application, and beneath the bottom drawer is a wonderful carved mahogany lion mask in full relief on both sides. The gables are panelled and the desk is freestanding, polished at the back again with fielded panels. At the front are well carved cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees, scrolling brackets and ball and claw feet. The back legs are square and tapering with scratch carving finishing on raised, turned toes. The desk is a wonderful example of carved Chippendale style.
