Description
Circa 1860. A mid Victorian carved oak pedestal desk with trade label of’ Druce & Co, upholsters and cabinetmakers Baker Street, Portland Square, London.’ The top with a red leather tooled and gilded insert, broad banding and finely carved for- edge, the front 1 long and 2 short drawers with knob handles, the pedestals each with a bank of 3 graduating drawers which are beaded and have a pair of oak knobs. The back of the desk has carved flower head rondels spaced evenly on the frieze, and two large carved panels in the base framed with a smaller carved panel and the panels on the sides framed also with an unusual emblem, perhaps a coat of arms with foliate carving with a draping flag, all resting on a pair of enclosed oak plinths. The back of the desk is quite dark indicating that it was not exposed to direct sunshine.
