Circa 1870, exhibition quality, walnut and carved walnut Scottish open bookcase. In the style of John Taylor of Edinburgh, with a solid well-figured walnut top, and a small breakfront section above a carved apron, surmounted by carved capitals with leaves and fruit. A pair of carved pilasters run down the front of the bookcase, framed within a moulded section with chamfered sides. With 3 adjustable pine shelves with walnut facings, held in place with brass clasps, and a base which spreads onto a block which continues down below the plinth. At the sides the gables run to the floor with a cut out section for skirting boards at the back.
