Product Description

Circa 1830, exhibition quality early 19th century walnut and burr walnut open bookcase. With two sections each with two adjustable oak-faced, fluted shelves. The sides have fluted pilasters with exquisite foliate carving below and very fine Corinthian capitals. The carved frieze of finest-quality carving features lion masks and foliate decorations and centrally, a carved ship with the motif  “By Industry We Prosper” and is surmounted by excellent quality burr walnut top. The carved ship and motto have been listed in The Book of Family Crests, Volume 2 by John Peter Elven, 1840 as featuring on the Gavin family crest.
