Description

Circa 1820, beautiful George IV mahogany writing table/architects desk probably by Gillows of Lancaster. The rectangular top has its original leather, which is distressed but still has a good look about it. The edge of the top is crossbanded mahogany and the fore edge is reeded. Beneath this is a configuration of one long drawer in the centre and two smaller drawers on each side, with the original cast brass swan neck handles and original brass and steel lock. There are fielded panels on the front and sides which are beaded and have a flame mahogany panel inside – six of these in total. The top is fixed with a double hinge mechanism which opens and is held in position with a ratchet mechanism. Unusually, the top can be opened from the front or back and has a multiple of positions. All the mechanism is made in solid mahogany and is in perfect condition. Beneath the drawers is a nice fine beading and the whole piece stands on four elegant turned fluted tapering legs finishing on a chunky brass cup castor. The back of the desk is polished. The overall effect is a wonderful piece of Georgian furniture. Excellent colour and condition.
