Description

Circa 1890, French mahogany card table. The square table has rounded corners, and the top is segmented into 4 triangles. The inside of the table top is lined in green felt with a gilded border. The triangle shapes have a brass bezel that continues around both sides towards the outside of the table, becoming enlarged and forming the border. It is an unusual feature. This can be an expensive process as the wood and brass have to be cut and moulded to each other. At the front is one full length drawer which is bombe shaped with herringbone style banding and its original lock. The drawer is oak lined. The sides of the back of the card table are polished and shaped similarly to the drawer front, making the card table free standing. When the table is closed the brass mechanism holding the top in place is visible. The table stands on 4 elegant cabriole legs with chamfered fore edges on the inside and finished with finely cast ormolu mounted sabots.
