Description

Circa 1860, an exhibition quality Victorian rosewood, walnut and kingwood marquetry inlaid circular breakfast table. The table has a moulded and ebonised fore-edge and has been made with segments of various veneers. These veneers taper down towards the centre. The centre has a stylish flower head motif and from this patterns emerge outwards. The marquetry has been mainly done with woods that are repeated across the top: rosewood, satinwood and kingswood. The table has a spring-loaded snap top with large mahogany clasp at the back to hold it in place. The back of the table is polished and is on a mahogany carcass. The block of the table stands on a turned column. The base of this column has a carved bezel that spreads out with a decorative design. From this there are 3 large chunky profusely carved cabriole legs. These have foliate carving on the top, scrolling acanthus leaves falling over the sides. It has a scrolling rococo design on the back.
